In the quiet beauty of autumn Bavaria, a profound moment of spiritual remembrance and thanksgiving filled the hearts of the faithful as His Eminence Archbishop Daniel visited the Protection of the Mother of God Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Ingolstadt, Germany, to prayerfully celebrate the 80th anniversary of the parish’s ministry among Ukrainian Orthodox Christians in Bavaria. The parish, presently guided with pastoral dedication by Rev. Fr. Alexander Smoktunowicz, stands today as a living witness to the faith, resilience, and spiritual courage of generations of Ukrainians scattered far from their homeland.

The history of the parish is deeply intertwined with one of the most painful chapters in the life of the Ukrainian people. In 1945, as the Second World War drew to its end, thousands of Ukrainians - refugees, forced laborers, and survivors of unimaginable hardship - found themselves in the displaced persons camp of Ingolstadt.

That same year, the U.S. military administration provided a modest building in the very center of the town - a former powder warehouse - to serve as a church. And on October 14, 1945, the Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God, the first Divine Liturgy was prayerfully offered. This was no coincidence: the Theotokos, defender of the Ukrainian Cossacks and protector of the suffering, became the heavenly patroness of the wounded Ukrainian community.

The first pastor ministered to a flock of over 5,000 Ukrainians - many of them former soldiers of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the UPA - who sought in the Church their only refuge, their only home, their only comfort.

Since its earliest days, the parish became not merely a place of worship, but a fragment of the homeland - a center of culture, national identity, prayer, and solidarity. It remains so today.

Upon his arrival in Ingolstadt, Archbishop Daniel was greeted at the steps of the historic neoclassical fortress-church by: the children of the parish, representatives of the Parish Board of Administration, and the pastor of the parish family, Rev. Fr. Alexander Smoktunowicz.

Their heartfelt greeting expressed not only respect for the hierarch, but the love of a spiritual family that treasures its history and its shepherds.

The children approached their archpastor with flowers and the traditional bread and salt - symbols of purity, nourishment, and fidelity. Receiving these gifts, Archbishop Daniel offered a blessing and greeting of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony and thanked the children for their innocence, hospitality, and the beauty of their offering, reminding them that the Church’s future depends on the faith of its youngest members.

In his opening remarks, Archbishop Daniel reflected on the profound parallel between the parish’s beginnings and its present mission:

“Eighty years ago, Ukrainian refugees - broken by war and violence - established this parish. They built a spiritual home in exile, trusting that God had not abandoned them. Today, many of us also stand here as refugees, forced to flee Ukraine because of the brutal Russian aggression against our people and our homeland. We are reliving the history of our ancestors.”

He continued: “Just as your forefathers created a sanctuary of hope in 1945, you too – today - build upon their foundation. You care for refugees, you preserve the faith, you support Ukraine, and you pray with tears for peace and stability in our ancestral land. Their faith has become your mission.”

These words deeply moved the community, many of whom had indeed arrived in Germany in recent years, carrying the wounds of war, separation, and uncertainty - yet also carrying the light of faith passed down by previous generations.

Inside the church, Archbishop Daniel was joined by 15 clergy of the Western European Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Diaspora under the omophorion of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, along with four deacons assisting at the altar. Rev. Fr. Alexander welcomed the hierarch warmly, pointing to the icon of the Protection of the Mother of God prayerfully placed in the center of the temple.

Fr. Alexander reflected on the maternal care of the Theotokos, who through decades has sheltered the faithful in Ingolstadt - just as today she shelters the suffering people of Ukraine beneath her holy omophorion.

More than 250 faithful filled the church, united in gratitude for God’s mercy and the unbroken spiritual chain that connects them to the parish founders of 1945.

Preaching on the Gospel narrative of Christ casting out the evil spirit from the possessed man, Archbishop Daniel invited the faithful to recognize the spiritual battle of every age.

“Christ breaks every chain of darkness. But He also calls us to act. Do not only say prayers - become prayer. Allow God to work through your compassion, your charity, your courage, your witness.”

He continued: “Our ancestors prayed and acted. They had nothing - but they built everything. Today, while Ukraine stands in the fire of war, we too must pray and act. Be the hands of Christ for refugees. Be the voice of truth for the world. Be the living Gospel in your homes and communities.”

Following the Divine Liturgy and the reception of the Eucharist, the community joined in a procession around the church, during which Archbishop Daniel proclaimed the Gospel, blessed the faithful, and prayed for the next decades of parish life.

He offered a heartfelt wish: “May God grant you strength to celebrate the 90th anniversary in ten years, and the centennial in twenty years - a century of Ukrainian Orthodox presence in Ingolstadt, illuminated by faith, unity, and the protection of the Mother of God.”

After the service, Fr. Alexander presented a touching gift: a wood-carved icon of the Mother of God Protectress, spreading her holy omophorion over the map of Ukraine.

Every participant received a commemorative icon of the Protection of the Mother of God, honoring the parish’s 80-year witness.

Archbishop Daniel encouraged all to continue daily prayers for: peace in Ukraine, refugees scattered across the world, and the defenders of Ukraine, who protect not only the nation but the peace of the entire European continent.

The celebration continued with a beautifully prepared festive luncheon presented by the women of the parish - simple, delicious dishes appropriate for the Nativity Fast (Pylypivka). Children recited poetry and sang songs that echoed the spiritual legacy of the parish and the gratitude for its founders.

The congregation was blessed by the presence of the Consul of Ukraine at the Consulate General of Ukraine in Munich, Mr. Serhii Kulaets, who joined the joyful celebration and extended heartfelt wishes to the faithful for many blessed years in their service and ministry.

Late into the evening, Archbishop Daniel remained with the people - speaking with families, blessing children, listening to personal stories, offering prayers, and strengthening the bonds of the parish family.

The 80th anniversary of the Protection of the Mother of God Parish in Ingolstadt became a powerful reminder that: history lives again among us, faith survives every exile, love rebuilds what war destroys, and the Mother of God continues to protect her children - yesterday, today, and forever.

Through the pastoral devotion of Rev. Fr. Alexander Smoktunowicz, the dedicated clergy, and the archpastoral guidance of Archbishop Daniel, the parish stands as a sacred beacon of hope for Ukrainians in Bavaria and throughout the diaspora.

The legacy begun in 1945 lives on today - strong, faithful, and radiant.

Вісімдесят років віри та вірності: Архипастирський візит Високопреосвященнішого Архієпископа Даниїла до Української Православної Парафії Покровa Пресвятої Богородиці в Інгольштадті, Німеччина

У тихій осінній красі Баварії глибока мить духовного спомину та подяки наповнила серця вірних, коли Високопреосвященніший Архієпископ Даниїл відвідав Українську Православну Парафію Покрову Пресвятої Богородиці в Інгольштадті, Німеччина, щоб молитовно відзначити 80-ту річницю служіння парафії серед українських православних християн у Баварії. Парафія, якою сьогодні з пастирською відданістю опікується о. Олександр Смоктунович, є живим свідченням віри, стійкості та духовної мужності поколінь українців, розсіяних далеко від рідного краю.

Історія парафії тісно пов’язана з одним із найболючіших розділів життя українського народу. У 1945 році, коли Друга світова війна наближалася до завершення, тисячі українців - біженців, примусових робітників та тих, хто пережив неймовірні страждання - опинилися в таборі переміщених осіб в Інгольштадті.

Того ж року американська військова адміністрація надала скромну будівлю в самому центрі міста - колишній пороховий склад - для облаштування храму. І 14 жовтня 1945 року, у свято Покрову Пресвятої Богородиці, було звершено першу Божественну Літургію. Це було невипадково: Пресвята Богородиця, заступниця українського козацтва і втіха стражденних, стала небесною покровителькою зраненої української громади.

Перший настоятель служив духовним опікуном понад 5,000 українців - багатьох із них колишніх вояків Української Народної Республіки та УПА, які шукали в Церкві свій єдиний прихисток, єдину домівку, єдину розраду.

Від перших днів свого існування парафія стала не просто місцем молитви - вона стала часткою Батьківщини, осередком культури, національної ідентичності, молитви та солідарності. Такою вона залишається й сьогодні.

Після прибуття до Інгольштадта, Архієпископа Даниїла зустріли на порозі історичного неокласичного храму-фортеці: діти парафії, представники Парафіяльної Ради та настоятель парафії о. Олександр Смоктунович.

Їхнє щире вітання виражало не лише повагу до архіпастиря, але й любов духовної родини, яка дорожить своєю історією та своїми пастирями.

Діти підійшли до архіпастиря з квітами та традиційним хлібом-сіллю - символами чистоти, поживи і вірності. Приймаючи ці дари, Архієпископ Даниїл подякував дітям за їхню чистоту, гостинність і красу дарунку, нагадуючи, що майбутнє Церкви залежить від віри її наймолодших та передав вітання Високопреосвященнішого митрополита Антонія.

У своїх вступних словах Архієпископ Даниїл звернув увагу на глибоку паралель між початками парафії та її сучасною місією:

«Вісімдесят років тому українські біженці - зламані війною та насиллям - заснували цю парафію. Вони створили духовний дім у вигнанні, довіряючи, що Бог їх не залишив. Сьогодні багато з нас також стоять тут як біженці, змушені покинути Україну через жорстоку російську агресію проти нашого народу й Батьківщини. Ми знову проживаємо історію наших предків».

Він продовжив: «Так само як ваші прадіди створили осередок надії у 1945 році, так і ви сьогодні продовжуєте будувати на їхньому фундаменті. Ви опікуєтеся біженцями, зберігаєте віру, підтримуєте Україну, молитеся зі сльозами за мир і стабільність у нашій історичній Батьківщині. Їхня віра стала вашою місією».

Ці слова глибоко зворушили громаду, багато членів якої справді прибули до Німеччини в останні роки, несучи в серці рани війни, розлуки й невизначеності - але також несучи світло віри, переданої попередніми поколіннями.

У храмі до Архієпископа Даниїла приєдналися 15 священнослужителів Західноєвропейської єпархії Української Православної Церкви в Діаспорі під омофором Вселенського Патріархату, а також чотири диякони. Отець Олександр тепло привітав архіпастиря, вказавши на ікону Покрову Пресвятої Богородиці, молитовно поставлену в центрі храму.

Отець Олександр говорив про материнську опіку Богородиці, яка протягом десятиліть оберігала вірних у Інгольштадті - так само як і сьогодні вона огортає своїм святим омофором стражденний народ України.

Понад 250 вірних наповнили храм, єднаючись у подяці за Боже милосердя та за нерозривний духовний ланцюг, що пов’язує їх із засновниками парафії 1945 року.

Проповідуючи на євангельську розповідь про вигнання нечистого духа, Архієпископ Даниїл запросив вірних усвідомити духовну боротьбу кожної доби.

«Христос руйнує кожний ланцюг темряви. Але Він також кличе нас діяти. Не лише промовляйте молитви -станьте молитвою. Дозвольте Богові діяти через ваше милосердя, вашу жертовність, вашу мужність, ваше свідчення».

Він продовжив: «Наші предки молилися і діяли. У них не було нічого - але вони збудували все. Сьогодні, коли Україна палає у вогні війни, ми теж повинні молитися і діяти. Будьте руками Христа для біженців. Будьте голосом правди для світу. Будьте живим Євангелієм у своїх домівках і громадах».

Після Божественної Літургії та прийняття Євхаристії громада долучилася до хресного ходу навколо храму, під час якого Архієпископ Даниїл проголошував Євангеліє, благословляв вірних і молився за наступні десятиліття парафіяльного життя.

Він виголосив щире побажання: «Нехай Господь дасть вам сили відсвяткувати 90-річчя через десять років і сторіччя через двадцять - століття української православної присутності в Інгольштадті, просвітлене вірою, єдністю і Покровом Божої Матері».

Після богослужіння о. Олександр підніс зворушливий дарунок: дерев’яну різьблену ікону Богородиці-Покровительки, яка простягає свій святий омофор над мапою України.

Кожен парафіянин отримав пам’ятну ікону Покрову Пресвятої Богородиці на честь 80-річного свідчення парафії.

Архієпископ Даниїл закликав усіх продовжувати щоденні молитви за: мир в Україні, біженців, розсіяних у світі, та оборонців України, які захищають не лише Батьківщину, але й мир у всій Європі.

Святкування продовжилося святковою трапезою, яку приготували жінки парафії - смачні й пісні страви, відповідні до Різдвяного посту (Пилипівки). Діти декламували вірші та співали пісні, що відлунювали духовну спадщину парафії та вдячність її засновникам.

Парафіяльна громада вдячна Консулу України Генеральному консульстві України в Мюнхені пану Тарасу Кулайцю, який своєю присутністю розділив радість святкування та щиро побажав вірним многих і благих літ у служінні Українській Православній Церкві.

До пізнього вечора Архієпископ Даниїл залишався з людьми - спілкувався з родинами, благословляв дітей, слухав особисті історії, підносив молитви та зміцнював духовні зв’язки парафіяльної родини.

80-та річниця Парафії Покрову Пресвятої Богородиці в Інгольштадті стала потужним нагадуванням про те, що: історія знову оживає серед нас, віра переживає будь-яке вигнання, любов відбудовує те, що війна руйнує, а Богородиця продовжує оберігати своїх дітей - учора, сьогодні й повсякчас.

Завдяки пастирській відданості о. Олександра Смоктуновича, ревному служінню духовенства та архипастирському проводові Архієпископа Даниїла, парафія стоїть як святий маяк надії для українців у Баварії та по всій діаспорі.

Спадщина, започаткована у 1945 році, живе сьогодні - міцна, вірна і світла.
